Twitter/X introduced an exciting feature a few months ago, primarily overshadowed by the name change. This feature is known as communities.
The best explanation for them is they are similar to groups on Facebook. Here, people with particular topics of interest gather.
What makes them so unique to writers is that the tweets you show this community do not go to the general public or show on your profile.
Why use communities?
I have always struggled with X as I have various interests. Most of you recognised Crime and History as two of my interests, but I have many more.
Being a parent of three children, one with additional needs, gives me a unique perspective on X. Mixing this with my role as a teacher, I can offer those parents fighting the system some advice.
I am an avid bookworm who likes a good chat on the latest blockbusters or classics. Finally, I have been known to post some political opinions on X.
Experts will tell you not to talk about politics on social media; I disagree showing your views and who you are can encourage readers.
How to use communities
Working through a list of the X communities can be tiresome, so I suggest you search for those you are interested in.
I searched for communities in all my areas of interest and the topics of the articles I wrote. It is easy to join them with one click. Ensure you view the rules to see if they allow link posting, etc.
Once there, you can share your relevant words of wisdom and article links to the communities. The only people who see this content belong in the community.
For this reason, I would look for communities with large followings.
When you post to them, your other followers will not see content they are not interested in.
Advantages
The main advantage of this strategy is you are posting content to people you know are interested in it. If they hated that content, people would not be in a True Crime group. Your article views will increase.
The other advantage is you are advertising yourself as an expert in that area. People in that group may follow you for that content or look into your other work if they like what you post.
If you are worried that your other followers might not see your posts if they are not in the community, you can always publish twice, once to the group and once to everyone.
There is nothing to lose as a writer. If you are on X, you have to find your community.
